Inspired by the Readers Digest and Observer’s Book of Birds I took up birding seriously as a schoolboy on Tyneside in the seventies. After phasing for three years when I was an undergraduate in London I returned to the North-East and survived the manic years of the eighties twitching scene before spending a couple of years in Denver, Colorado. I returned to the UK and settled in Norwich in late 1990 where between my work as a biochemistry lecturer at UEA and raising a family it has not always possible to find a lot of time for birding. But with grown up children there should be greater opportunities for travel, twitching, photography, mothing and even picking up a few new skills along the way.
